Eyebrows have become a beauty obsession. The likes of Jennifer Hawkins, Cara Delevingne and the Kardashian clan can attest to that.
The brow has become so important in the fashion world that there’s now such a thing as eyebrow tattoos. Yes, we’re talking about real tattoos.
There’s also a thing called eyebrow microblading, which is a semi-permanent type of tattoo.
Gordana Poljak, who provides these services, says a better brow can make a person look five to 10 years younger.
Gordana is a makeup artist for Hollywood stars when they’re in Australia.
Her clients have included Reese Witherspoon, Anne Hathaway, Anna Faris, Cate Blanchett, Rose Byrne, Teresa Palmer, Rachael Taylor and Rachel Griffiths.
Her male clients have included Tom Hiddleston, Vince Vaughn, Orlando Bloom, Mel Gibson, Russell Crowe, Ashton Kutcher and Hugh Grant.
Gordana will be at BellaFACE Medi Spa’s new Honeysuckle premises on Wednesday to provide cosmetic tattooing and eyebrow microblading services.
“The Kardashians have brought much more awareness to the eyebrow,” Gordana told Topics.
“I tell customers ‘I’m not going to give you a Kardashian brow, if it doesn’t suit you’. I’ll customise your eyebrows for you.
“I’ll even customise them to make them look as much Kardashian for your face as possible.”
Gordana said good eyebrows make faces look structurally balanced and more beautiful.
“Over time, the brow loses definition and hair. It becomes sparse and uninteresting. The idea is to beautify the brow to its original, younger look,” she said.
What does she think about all those older men with bushy eyebrows, like, say, former PM Johnny Howard?
“Beauty isn’t promoted as much among males, so men walk around with unruly and unattractive eyebrows,” she said.
“That actually adds to their unattractiveness. If a man grooms his brow or his goatee or beard, he’ll look that much better.”
She said a good eyebrow was like a “photo in a frame”, as opposed to a photo without a frame.
As well as fashion, Gordana also does cosmetic tattooing for women who suffer from medical conditions such as alopecia and cancer.
Risk Taker
We couldn’t help but ask Gordana about the striking tattoos on her body. She joked that it was a way to get back at her parents.
“I’m not afraid to take risks. I’ve always had a love of tattoos ever since I was a little girl,” she said.
And what about her Hollywood clients? How did she get connected to those circles.
“I worked at Channel 9 as a hair and makeup artist,” she said.
When the stars would return to Australia, they’d contact her.
“It went from one star to another,” she said.
The next skill she plans to master is scalp tattooing for bald people.
“It makes them look like they’ve got a hairline. It’s called scalp aesthetics,” she said.
Gordana operates from her Sydney studio called Dr Freckle and Mr Hide.
